Focus
I think there is a tendency within the church to focus on "go and make disciples" in the last part of Matthew 28, as if we needed to know and teach, more than anything, what we are commanded to do. But that is foolish. The "go and make disciples" command is sandwiched between something very, very important: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" and "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." We are commanded and able to make disciples only through the power of God, who is indeed with us!

As we are moving to become a disciple making church, I thought it important to mention that we need to provide equipping and training for our people to fulfill that call they feel. Currently, we will be launching a class of becoming set apart Jan. 5 on Sunday evenings. This group will learn what it means to be completely open to God. My vision is that these members will reproduce this group style discipleship process for others. In addition, I am currently working on a model and guide for one on one discipleship. I also believe it is important to have a curriculum that helps people know what the disciplines, practices, and exercises of the church are so they may take advantage of every opportunity to become set apart. This curriculum would also have an accountability factor built in. I hope to have a lot of this material available by January.

Alan -- I've focused a lot more the past two years on both curriculum and methods for developing disciples. I'd love to see what you create.
Regarding spiritual disciplines specifically, are you familiar with the book The Life You've Always Wanted, by John Ortberg? Enjoyable reading, excellent overview of spiritual disciplines, addresses both human and divine roles in transformation.
Debi,
I haven't read that book, but I have read several others in regards to disciplines. There are also other practices and exercises which fall outside the bounds of disciplines which enable believers to experience a new dimension of God's presence I wish to include.
